Translating the competition for light in a forest, Stands combines the capacity of sunlight to fade, and silk dyed with forest-dwelling plants reputed to dominate. Incorporating silk initially exhibited as an experimental work in the windows of Leitrim Sculpture Centre during my 2024 Landscape, Ecology & Environment Research (LEER) Residency, faint bevelled-edged shapes echo those pasted together and exist as a subtle marker of time. Created using Tyvek, a preservation material normally used in storing museum textile collections, applied to the gallery’s glazing under naturally dyed silk, exposing unmasked areas of silk to the sun to fade or transfer dyes between silk swatches over the course of the show.
